Design and creative jobs cover graphic and brand design, UX, UI and product design, motion and media design, illustration and the production work that turns ideas into print, packaging and screens. Employers include brands with in-house teams, agencies and studios, software companies, publishers, public bodies and international organizations. Contracts range from vocational training places and freelance projects to fixed-term cover posts and permanent lead roles.
What sets the field apart is that a portfolio usually counts for more than a degree, and that it splits into two job markets. Print, brand and social media design is widespread and often modestly paid, while product and UX design sits closer to software and, where data exists, pays more. Visual work travels across languages better than writing does, but most in-house and public-sector roles still require the local language.
This guide covers the boards that list design jobs in over a dozen countries, how AI is changing what employers ask for, pay data where it is published and online communities for designers. Board counts were checked on 7 November 2026. For current vacancies, see our page of design and creative open positions, which links each ad directly.
How design hiring is changing
AI tools have moved quickly into design work. The AI in Design Report 2026 from Designer Fund and Foundation Capital surveyed over 900 designers in more than 60 countries and found that half had pushed AI-generated code to production. It also reports that hiring managers now want AI fluency while keeping a high bar for craft, vision and storytelling; the findings are on the report’s website.
Demand has not collapsed. In a survey of hiring managers around the world, Figma found that 82% said their need for designers had stayed stable or increased, though Figma sells design tools and the sample size is not published. In the UK, a summary of the Design Council’s Design Economy 2026 report counts 2.27 million design roles across construction, services and manufacturing, up 15% from 2020 to 2025.
The ads we checked match that picture. A Swiss software company wants experience with generative AI tools such as Adobe Firefly and Midjourney, an Estonian fleet software firm wants daily use of AI in design, and a Norwegian consultancy asks designers to judge where AI helps and where it carries risks. Several ads also bundle design with video, social media or marketing tasks.
Where design jobs are advertised
Design hiring abroad mostly runs through national job boards and portfolio platforms. The counts below are keyword searches on 7 November 2026, and several boards match loosely, so filter by job title.
Design platforms and specialist boards
Dribbble’s job board showed 48 recent posts when we checked, mostly product, UX and brand roles. About two-thirds were remote, and the rest included jobs in London, Paris, Kraków and Barcelona as well as many US cities. Dribbble and Behance also work as portfolio sites that recruiters search directly.
Specialist boards are strongest for product and UX roles at technology companies, which often hire in English. Graphic, print and packaging roles are more often advertised locally, through national boards and recruitment agencies.
National job boards
Norway’s public portal, arbeidsplassen.nav.no, returned about 145 results for designer, including UX, service, digital and graphic design roles, some of them in English at technology firms. In Switzerland, a designer search on jobs.ch returned 133 offers, though many were technical, interior or mechanical design roles.
Germany’s Make it in Germany portal returned 762 results for designer, mostly loose matches. Germany trains media designers through a vocational qualification, Mediengestalter Digital und Print, and many ads ask for it or equivalent experience. Estonia’s CV.ee returned five results, including a product design role paying up to €5,500 a month.
In Canada, Job Bank listed 10 graphic design postings from the previous week, each with stated pay, including multimedia, 3D and UX roles. South Africa’s PNet returned more than 3,000 results for graphic designer, many through recruitment agencies, and Nigeria’s Jobberman listed 210 jobs in its creative and design category. In Colombia, elempleo returned about 20 results for diseñador, a mix of graphic, product and audiovisual roles.
International organizations
UN agencies, the Red Cross movement and other international bodies hire graphic and multimedia designers, mostly as consultants, interns or volunteers rather than staff. A search for graphic designer on Impactpool’s design listings returned 43 results from UNICEF, IFRC, the UN’s communications department, UNV and the European Space Agency. Several closed within days of posting, so set alerts rather than checking occasionally.
These roles usually ask for a design degree or equivalent experience, strong English and skills in data visualization or accessible design. Our guide to UN and NGO jobs explains the contract types and who is eligible for each.
Portfolios, tools and languages
Almost every ad we checked asked for a portfolio. Product and UX roles want case studies showing how a problem was framed, the trade-offs made and what happened after launch, while graphic roles want print, digital and brand work. Adobe Creative Cloud remains the standard toolkit for graphic roles, Figma for product work, and some print and signage employers still ask for CorelDRAW.
Language requirements follow the employer. Norwegian public-sector and consultancy roles required good Norwegian, and German, Colombian and most Swiss ads assumed the local language. English-only roles appeared mainly at technology start-ups and international companies, such as an Oslo AI firm that hires in English.
What design jobs pay
Official pay data exists for only a few countries, and it groups graphic and web designers with illustrators. The table separates official statistics from ad figures, which are single vacancies and not averages. Figures are in local currency and are not converted.
| Country | Role or group | Pay | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | Graphic and web designers, and illustrators | A$1,850 a week (median, full time) | Official | Jobs and Skills Australia |
| Canada | Graphic designers and illustrators (NOC 52120) | C$31.25 an hour (median) | Official | Job Bank, updated 19 November 2025 |
| Canada | Graphic designer, Saint John | C$34 to 40 an hour | Ad | Job Bank |
| Estonia | Senior product designer, Tallinn | €3,500 to 5,500 a month, gross | Ad | CV.ee |
| Colombia | Senior graphic designer, Bogotá | COP 3 million to 3.5 million a month | Ad | elempleo |
| South Africa | Conceptual graphic designer, Sandton | R240,000 to 318,000 a year | Ad | PNet |
| South Africa | Graphic designer, Cape Town | R22,000 to 25,000 a month plus benefits | Ad | PNet |
| Nigeria | Graphic designer and video editor, Lagos | NGN 70,000 to 150,000 a month | Ad | Jobberman |
| United States | Graphic designers | $62,960 a year (median, May 2025) | Official | US Bureau of Labor Statistics |
| United States | Web and digital interface designers | $104,000 a year (median, May 2025) | Official | US Bureau of Labor Statistics |
The Australian figure covers full-time employees from an ABS survey in May 2025. The Nigerian ad gives NGN 70,000 to 150,000 in its header but NGN 80,000 in the description, a common inconsistency on that board.
The US gap between graphic designers and interface designers shows the split in the field: digital product skills earn far more than print and brand production. Most Swiss, German and Norwegian ads we checked did not state pay.
Communities for designers
Reddit’s r/graphic_design is one of the largest design forums, at about 2.7 million members according to third-party subreddit trackers. Threads cover portfolios, pricing, clients and software. UX and product designers gather in r/userexperience, which had about 140,000 members in a December 2025 count by Search Engine Journal.
Dribbble, Behance and Instagram double as portfolios and networks, and recruiters search them directly. LinkedIn matters most for in-house and product roles, while local design associations and meetups help with agency work in a new city.
What to watch
The US BLS projects graphic designer jobs to fall 2% from 2025 to 2035, with about 16,000 openings a year, mostly to replace workers who leave. Web developers and digital designers are projected to grow 5%, with about 13,600 openings a year. The figures are for the United States only, but they match the split seen in ads elsewhere.
For designers moving abroad, the strongest positions combine a portfolio with measurable results, comfort with AI tools and either the local language or product design skills that technology firms hire for in English. Print and production roles remain open in many countries, often through agencies and vocational routes such as Germany’s media designer qualification.
