UN, NGO and Development Jobs: Boards, Programs and Pay

International development work is spread across three kinds of employer: UN agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP and the International Organization for Migration; development banks such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank; and international NGOs, from Médecins Sans Frontières to the International Rescue Committee. The jobs cover program management, monitoring and evaluation, health, education, child protection, logistics, finance and economic research, based in capital-city offices or in field locations close to the people being served. Contracts run from two-month internships and volunteer assignments to fixed-term staff posts of several years.

What sets the sector apart from most job markets is how posts are graded. Almost every UN ad carries a grade code, and that code decides whether a post is recruited internationally or locally, how it is paid, and whether the employer will help with a visa. Most of the work is local: about 90% of MSF staff are hired in their own country, and the UN fills its General Service and National Officer grades at the duty station while recruiting its Professional grades internationally. Those international posts start at a net base salary of US$43,834 a year at P-1 and US$56,046 at P-2, on the UN pay scale that took effect on 1 January 2026, according to the International Civil Service Commission.

The difference shows up in the ads themselves. A UNICEF ad for a G-5 assistant in Nigeria states that UNICEF will not arrange a visa or work permit for General Service or National Officer candidates, while a UNICEF P-4 ad in Kigali is open to all nationalities. This directory covers the structured entry programs, the boards that collect these ads, four employers that recruit directly, the forums where aid workers talk, and published UN, World Bank and UN Volunteer pay. Every site below was opened on 30 October 2026. Individual vacancies are kept in a separate list of current open positions, checked regularly.

Trade-policy and trade-facilitation roles at the WTO, ITC and similar bodies are covered in the trade and logistics jobs directory.

Four entry programs with published rules

UN Young Professionals Programme

The UN Secretariat’s Young Professionals Programme recruits entry-level Professional staff through a competitive examination open to nationals of participating countries, which change each year. A secondary report gives a 30 November 2026 deadline for the 2027 exam in Development and Sustainability. The official page on careers.un.org did not load without a browser, so the countries, age limit and degree rules were not confirmed there.

  • Strength: A route into a Professional post that does not require prior UN experience.
  • Limit: Only nationals of the countries invited in a given year may sit the exam.

United Nations Volunteers

UNV placed 17,169 volunteers across the UN system in 2025, 93% of them from countries of the Global South and 6,894 hosted by UNDP. Volunteers serve at home, abroad or online, and register first in a talent pool from which some assignments are filled without being advertised. Its conditions of service set an age range of 18 to 80 and experience minimums by category, from none for community volunteers to seven years for experts.

  • Strength: Open to graduates with little experience at the associate level, and paid through a published living allowance.
  • Limit: The allowance is not a salary, and many placements are filled straight from the talent pool.

Junior Professional Officer program

The JPO program places early-career professionals in UN agencies, funded by their own governments. The JPO Service Centre at UNDP administered 198 JPOs and Specialist Development Programme participants of 26 nationalities as of 1 August 2025. UNICEF lists the JPO program as one of its three talent routes.

  • Strength: A first international post, paid for by the candidate’s own government.
  • Limit: Eligibility depends on whether a candidate’s government sponsors JPOs, and the overview page does not list the sponsoring countries.

World Bank Young Professionals Program

The World Bank YPP sets no age limit. It asks for a graduate degree, two to six years of full-time professional experience and excellent English, and offers a two-year term appointment at grade GF followed by placement for a further five years. The window for the latest cohort ran from 1 to 30 September 2026, and only the top 10% of applicants advance from the longlist.

  • Strength: Clear eligibility rules and a published salary band for the starting grade.
  • Limit: The application window lasts one month a year, and the page does not say how many people are selected.

Four job boards and what their pages state

ReliefWeb

ReliefWeb Jobs showed 824 vacancies on 30 October 2026, many from smaller NGOs. ReliefWeb is a service of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which also aggregates reports from more than 4,000 sources.

  • Strength: Free and run by a UN office, with heavy coverage of NGO field posts, many in French.
  • Limit: Organization and closing date did not show on the list page when fetched, so each ad has to be opened.

Impactpool

Impactpool listed 3,574 jobs on 30 October 2026 and says more than 3,500 organizations use it, including FAO, ICRC, IOM, UNDP, UNICEF and UNV. Each listing shows the grade, such as P-3, GS-5 or NPSA-5, and many reproduce the full posting, salary included where the employer states one.

  • Strength: Grade labels make it quick to separate international, national and volunteer posts.
  • Limit: Its own pages warn that closing dates may be wrong, and some ads checked for this directory had passed their deadline while still listed.

UN Talent

UN Talent collects UN system jobs from 59 stated official sources, along with NGO posts from organizations such as Save the Children, Mercy Corps and FHI 360. Ads show days left rather than a date, and the site states that it is not an official UN document.

  • Strength: A single list mixing UN agencies and NGOs, with grade and seniority tags.
  • Limit: Individual ad pages refused automated access on 30 October 2026, and no operator is named.

Devex

The Devex jobs page calls itself the world’s largest global development job board, a claim the page does not support with a count. It offers membership, a career account and a paid Devex Pro tier without listing prices.

  • Strength: A long-running board dedicated to development work, with an employer posting route.
  • Limit: No job count, regions or prices appeared on the page when opened.

Four employers that recruit on their own sites

UNICEF

The UNICEF jobs site lists each vacancy with its grade, contract type and a closing time of 11:55 pm local time. On 30 October 2026 it ranged from two-month internships to D-1 deputy representative posts. Its careers page names three talent routes: JPOs, internships and UN Volunteers.

  • Strength: Closing dates and grades are stated on every ad.
  • Limit: Ads state no salary, and UNICEF will not arrange visas for General Service or National Officer posts.

UNDP

UNDP lists its vacancies at jobs.undp.org, and its careers page states that it does not charge a fee at any stage of recruitment and warns of fake vacancies that ask for registration, visa or booking fees. Its National Personnel Services Agreement (NPSA) ads often state the net monthly pay.

  • Strength: A plain no-fee statement, and pay published in many national contract ads.
  • Limit: The careers page itself does not explain its contract types; those sit on separate pages.

Médecins Sans Frontières

MSF says about 10% of its workforce is internationally mobile, specialists and senior managers on fixed-term field assignments, and about 90% is hired locally. Applicants choose field or office work and a recruitment office by country of residence. Its pay principles tie salary to the job grade and years of experience, set deliberately modest and benchmarked against the employee’s home labor market and other international NGOs.

  • Strength: The split between local and international hiring is stated plainly.
  • Limit: The pages opened gave no salary figures, and minimum requirements sit on a separate page.

Asian Development Bank

The Asian Development Bank hires only nationals of its 69 member countries, and runs recruitment outreach missions abroad. A Beijing mission on 29 and 30 October 2026, advertised on Impactpool, set experience bands of 3 years for early-career, 6 for mid-career and 10 for senior roles, with a master’s degree or a degree plus experience.

  • Strength: Experience bands and nationality rules are stated before anyone applies.
  • Limit: Outreach events need registration weeks ahead; registration for the Beijing mission closed on 9 October 2026.

Three subreddits where aid and UN workers talk

Reddit refused direct access, so member counts below come from GummySearch, a third-party analytics site, on the dates shown, and are rounded.

r/UNpath

About 24,000 members, up 6,000 in a year, as of 27 October 2026, per its GummySearch entry. It serves UN staff, consultants, interns and applicants, is not affiliated with the UN, and its most frequent topics are applications, interviews, internships and the YPP.

r/doctorswithoutborders

About 11,000 members, up 1,000 in a year, as of 1 October 2026, according to GummySearch. It is a fan community, not run by MSF, where members discuss the organization’s work and field roles.

r/humanitarian

About 10,000 members, up 2,000 in a year, as of 26 October 2026, per GummySearch’s page. It shares humanitarian news and resources, with displacement and aid delivery among the most frequent topics.

UN, World Bank and UN Volunteer pay for 2026

All figures below are official and in US dollars, but they measure different things. UN Professional figures are net base salaries before post adjustment, the cost-of-living supplement that varies by duty station. World Bank figures are the range for each grade in the United States. The UN Volunteer figure is a monthly allowance before the duty-station adjustment.

World Bank Group, grade GG, United StatesUS$145,200 minimum, US$207,400 market reference, US$269,500 maximum a yearOfficial: FY27 WBG salary scales, published 7 July 2026

The UN scale is the same worldwide, and post adjustment then raises it by duty station; the commission describes post adjustment as a cost-of-living measure meant to keep purchasing power equal. The World Bank document does not say whether its ranges are gross or net, and it lists separate ranges for other countries. A national UN Volunteer’s allowance is pegged to the local GS-2 salary instead of a dollar figure.

Where pay is not published, and the 1 January 2027 changes

General Service and National Officer salaries are set by local surveys for each duty station, and no current table for a field duty station such as Nairobi or Bangkok could be opened for this directory. NGO pay is the larger gap: MSF publishes its principles but not its figures, and most NGO ads state no salary. Ads that do, such as UNDP national contracts, are the best evidence for local pay.

UNV reviews its allowance base rates in the third quarter of each year for use from 1 January, so the 2027 rates take effect on 1 January 2027. The 2027 UN Young Professionals exam deadline reported for Development and Sustainability is 30 November 2026.
